Questions

What is the difference between handmade soap and grocery store soap? TOP

Handmade soaps are produced from a wide range of high-quality exotic and essential oils, giving you the best bathing experience possible. Soapmaking the "old fashioned" cold process way naturally produces glycerin that pampers your skin while allowing you to experience softly scented creamy lather. Handcrafted soaps nourish and help protect your precious skin by imparting beneficial oils that lock in moisture and create a protective barrier.

Commercial soap companies extract glycerin (for resale), a natural byproduct of soap production. In place of glycerin, they insert harsh chemicals, synthetic detergents and fragrance. If you're looking for a more natural, healthy alternative for skin health, handmade soaps are an avenue worth exploring!

You use sodium hydroxide (lye) to make your soaps. Isn't that a harsh chemical? TOP

Cold process soapmaking includes three basic ingredients: water, lye and fats (oils). When a lye & water solution is combined with fats, a reaction takes place between the hydrogen, oxygen, sodium and fatty acid molecules. This reaction is called saponification and the result is a substance that is roughly 5 parts soap and 1 part glycerin. Natural glycerin is a rich emollient that is highly touted for its' skin softening abilities.

Sodium Hydroxide is used in each soap recipe as a catalyst; it creates the chemical reaction that turns oils and fragrance into soap. During that chemical reaction, the sodium hydroxide is actually used up. Approximately 24 hours later, 99% of the sodium hydroxide is neutralized. For the next 3-4 weeks, soap sits to cure and dry, completing the neutralization process. All Rocky Corner Soapworks' soaps have been shelf-cured a minimum of 3-4 weeks.

How do I care for my handmade soap? TOP

Allow your soap to dry between uses. Handmade soap contains naturally-made glycerin which will turn your soap to mush if you leave it in water. If you have purchased a soap loaf, store the loaf in a breathable material such as tissue paper or cotton fabric. To cut your soap loaf, simply use a sharp kitchen knife. Store the remainder of your soap in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

I have a special skin condition. Will your products help me? TOP

We have many testimonials from individuals who have dramatic improvement in skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, chapped, dry and/or sunburned skin, etc.

We work with customers individually to educate them about the benefits of our handmade products and, if necessary, make custom products for them. We're happy to discuss your needs...just contact us at 603-275-1979.

What is the weight of your soap products? TOP

Soap Bars: Approx. 4-5 oz.

Soap Loaves: Approx. 1.75 - 2+ pounds

Why are some of your soaps shaped differently than others? TOP

We utilize several different soap molds.  Some produce bars and others are chunky soaps. Our loaf soaps are also made with different molds but the end product from each is approximately the same weight.
